Within Temptation je hudobná skupina pochádzajúca z Holandska. Založená bola gitaristom Robertom Westerholtom a vokalistkou Sharon den Adel. Hudba Within Temptation býva zaraďovaná k symfonickému, niekedy gotickému metalu.
Skupina vznikla v roku 1996, kedy sa k zakladajúcim členom, gitaristovi Robertovi Westerholtovi a jeho priateľke, speváčke Sharon den Adel, pridali basgitarista Jeroen van Veen, Martijn Westerholt hrajúci na klávesy a bubeník Ivar de Graaf. Rýchlo sa o nich začala zaujímať nahrávacia spoločnosť DSFA Records, s ktorou spísali zmluvu a začali pracovať na debutovom albume.
Ten bol vydaný pod názvom Enter v roku 1997 a zožal úspech. Skupina začala byť pozývaná na rôzne festivaly (ako napríklad Dynamo Open Air festival v Eindhovene, ktorý je považovaný za jeden z najväčších holandských heavy metalových podujatí) a okrem svojej vlasti sa predviedla taktiež na svojom prvom medzinárodnom turné v Nemecku a Rakúsku.
Skupina pokračovala v rôznych turné niekoľko rokov na to, pričom za tento čas stihli vydať len jedno EP s názvom The Dance.
Druhý plnohodnotný album vyšiel až koncom roku 2000 po tom, ako skupina využila možnosť výstavby vlastného nahrávacieho štúdia. Výsledkom bol album Mother Earth, ktorý vyvolal veľmi pozitívne ohlasy a rýchlo si našiel svoje miesto v holandských hudobných rebríčkoch. Skupina bola tiež za tento počin ocenená viacerými prestížnymi cenami.
Rok 2001 bol rokom zmien v kapele, k čomu prispel najmä odchod Ivara de Graafa a Martijna Westerholta, v tom istom roku nahradených Stephenom van Haestregtom a Martijnom Spierenburgom. Súčasťou skupiny sa stal aj druhý gitarista Ruud Adrianus Jolie.
Tretí album skupiny sa objavil 15. novembra 2004 a niesol názov The Silent Force. Within Temptation usporiadali viaceré koncerty v zahraničí (vrátane ich prvého dôležitejšieho vystúpenia v Londýne vo Veľkej Británii) a ich práca bola opäť ohodnotená viacerými oceneniami.
Dátum vydania nového albumu nazvaného The Heart of Everything sa rôznil podľa jednotlivých krajín, pohyboval sa v rozmedzí od 9. marca (v Rakúsku, Nemecku, Grécku, Taliansku, Holandsku a Švajčiarsku) do 24. júla 2007 (v Spojených štátoch). Pieseň „What Have You Done“ naspievaná s Keithom Caputom zo skupiny Life of Agony sa stala prvým singlom z albumu. The Heart of Everything tiež obsahuje aj jednu z piesní, ktoré vznikli vrámci spolupráce skupiny na videohre The Chronicles of Spellborn.
